Smith College: Research Technician

(posted 2017-09-08)

The Mangiamele Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Smith College seeks to hire a Research Technician. The Mangiamele lab studies the neurobiology of animal communication behavior. Specifically, we use a comparative approach and combine molecular and behavioral analyses to understand how the action of androgenic hormones is modified in neuromotor systems to support the evolution of new communication signals.

The successful candidate will be expected to assist in managing an active research laboratory, conduct experiments and analyze data, and assist in the mentoring of undergraduate students. This is an NSF grant-funded position with an initial appointment of one year, renewable for up to three years with yearly salary increases.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:
• Perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks, such as general lab housekeeping and organization, ordering and stocking supplies, and maintaining lab records.
• Conduct experiments using qPCR, in situ hybridization, neuronal tract-tracing, and behavioral analysis to study the effects of androgens in regulating a complex and ecologically relevant motor behavior.
• Assist with literature research, scientific illustrations and computer graphics, and preparing manuscripts for publication.
• Assist animal care staff in maintaining a tropical frog colony.

Minimum qualifications:
Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in biology, neuroscience, or related discipline is required. Training can be provided, but candidates with experience in basic molecular biology techniques are strongly preferred.
Skills: Strong analysis and problem-solving skills. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Must have the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Interested candidates should submit the following: 1) a cover letter describing your relevant experience in a laboratory setting, 2) a current CV or resume, and 3) email and/or telephone contact information for your references. Please submit application materials through the Careers @ Smith website Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
