Young Investigator Applications

We are currently seeking NSF funding to support student travel to the SICB annual meeting in January 2005. Given that we will not hear about the success of our grant until October, we are soliciting applications now. The reasons for advertising awards before securing funding are that we feel funding is likely, and the timing of abstract submission and a decision from NSF are suboptimal. By soliciting applications now, we provide more students with the chance to receive a travel award. If we wait to solicit applications until after we hear from NSF, abstract submissions will be closed. In the unfortunate event that we don't secure funding and you can't afford to attend, timing is such that you will be able to withdrawal your abstract without having to pay anything.

Travel awards are intended to offset the cost of attending the SICB annual meeting in San Diego CA, January 4-8 2005. Award recipients are expected to present a paper during the oral session linked to the symposium "The Evolution of Complex Life-Histories in Marine Benthic Invertebrate", which is in memory of Dr. Larry McEdward. The award will be presented to successful students at the meeting.

Graduate students and recent graduates (< 2 years) that do not have a permanent position are eligible for the $500 travel award.
Students who apply for student support from SICB may also apply for this award.
