Sessions-Symposia-Social Events

The 2013 Annual Meeting for the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) is an educational and research forum for investigations of biology on a broad comparative scale. The meeting will include many symposia and special programs in addition to hundreds of contributed papers in divisional and topical sessions. Watch the SICB Web site at www.sicb.org for Schedule of Events updates and the posting of abstracts in November, 2012.

Student First Timer/Post Docs Welcome and Meeting Orientation

Thursday 3 January 2013, 5:30 pm, Ballroom C. "How to get the most out of your SICB meeting."
  • How to find relevant talks/posters during the meetings
  • How to find everyone at the meetings
  • How to approach a "big whig"
  • How to enter or leave a room/move between rooms
  • How to plan your meeting
  • How to get involved in SICB or attend business meetings and the importance of attending the meetings (exposure, recognition)
This will be followed by a lightning round of first timers' questions.

Opening Plenary Session

Thursday 3 January The Plenary Address, "Altering Rhythmicity: Slow Dance, Fast Dance, Hither and Yon," will be given by Richard Satterlie, SICB Past President and the Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Marine Biology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The Plenary will take place at the Hilton San Francisco.

Welcome to San Francisco Reception

The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology welcomes you to San Francisco with a reception on Thursday 3 January. The Welcome Reception will follow the Plenary lecture held at the HIlton San Francisco. Light snacks will be provided.

SRC Breakfast

The SRC Breakfast will take place Saturday 5 January, and will be held offsite this year at a nearby restaurant. Please join us at 6:30 am at LOCATION TBD. SICB will be reserving a table at the restaurant and you will pay for your breakfast at the restaurant.

SICB Business Meeting

The SICB Business Meeting will take place Sunday 6 January, from 5:15 - 6:15 pm.

American Microscopical Society

The annual AMS luncheon will be held on Sunday, January 6, 12:00-1:00; it will be "bring your own lunch" and prepaid tickets are not required. Please check the box on the registration form to indicate that you will attend.

SICB Society-Wide Social in Honor of Students and Postdocs

Join your fellow SICB members for a Society-Wide Social on Monday 7 January, from 4:00-6:00 pm. Wine and cheese will be served and a cash bar will be available.

Graduate Student Workshop

As in previous years, there will be a Graduate Student Workshop on Sunday 6 January, topic TBD.

Libbie Hyman Memorial Auction

DIZ will once again be hosting a fabulous Libbie Hyman Memorial auction at the meeting in San Francisco. All the proceeds from the auction will go towards the Libbie Hyman fund to provide financial support to a student studying invertebrates during their first significant field station experience. Donated items can range from a favorite book or t-shirt, to an invertebrate-themed piece of art, to a weekend for two at your home on the shore. We would like to have items for all interested buyers (think "graduate students" as well as full professors), so small-ticket items as well as large-ticket ones are appreciated. Be creative! For those who have auction items to donate that do not require shipping - please let Erika Iyengar, our DIZ secretary, know what your item is so we can plan ahead and add to a growing list. Poster Presentations

Poster sessions, with authors available for questions and answers, will take place each day from 3:00-5:00 pm. Posters will be available for viewing without the authors present for a longer amount of time.
Note that individuals who are oral or poster presenters at the meeting are required to register by no later than November 9, 2012, in order to have their abstract acceptance finalized and their presentation listed in the final program.

Annual Meeting Program and Abstracts

All registered attendees of the 2013 Annual Meeting will receive a copy of the Annual Meeting Program at the SICB Registration/Information Desk located at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. The full program will be available prior to the Annual Meeting on the Web site at www.sicb.org and attendees can plan their activities from the web. The abstracts will be online and will also be published as citable documents online in association with an issue of Integrative and Comparative Biology. For those who wish to have a hard copy version of the abstracts, it may be ordered prior to the meeting. See the registration form for this option.

Registration/Information Area

The SICB Registration/Information area will be located at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. The hours of operation are:

Friday 4 January 7:00 am-5:00 pm
Saturday 5 January 7:00 am-3:00 pm
Sunday 6 January 7:00 am-3:00 pm
Monday 7 January 7:00 am-3:00 pm

Staff is available during these times to assist you with membership enrollment, on-site registration, conference materials, employment opportunity information, meeting room locations, and information on San Francisco.

Employment Opportunities

The Employment Opportunity bulletin board will be located in the SICB Registration/Information area. The Employment Opportunity board will provide a place for attendees to post "Positions Wanted," and learn about "Positions Available." Interested attendees may schedule interviews in the room set aside for that purpose. See a registration desk attendant for assistance.

Message Board

A message board will be located in the SICB Registration/Information area. Attendees may also leave messages and announcements for other attendees on the message board.

Child Care

If you are interested in having child care services while at the meeting, and you have not already, please fill out the child care survey found here http://www.sicb.org/meetings/childcareform/index.php. Jill Drupa from the SICB business office will be in touch with those who request child care to get specific information regarding your needs so that the child care service is in place for the times needed.
